“Who is Maud Dixon?” Review

As I was waiting anxiously for our NEW October books to arrive, Who Is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra Andrews was suggested to me by a staff member. It is Andrews’ debut novel from 2021 and did not disappoint! The two main characters are both women, and though neither are exactly likable, they drew me into their devious plot and I was glued to the pages.

Florence Darrow is an assistant at a publishing company, but has always dreamed of becoming a writer. Unfortunately, she makes the bad choice of sleeping with and then trying to blackmail her boss’s boss and is promptly fired. Somehow Florence’s ‘dream job’ of working with a famous author is advertised and she is hired! Maud Dixon will be her new boss – an author that EVERYONE has read – and Florence is ecstatic. The catch is that Florence can not reveal who she works for OR reveal Maud Dixon’s real name. Those terms are fine with Florence until things begin to seem ‘off’ and she finds herself in a hospital in Morocco after an accident that she doesn’t remember. And she begins to wonder . . . “Who Is Maud Dixon?” (And I had been wondering that same question for quite a while!!)

There are many twists and turns in this psychological thriller. I could see some of the plot twists coming, but not all of them! These two women really show that greed, fame and ambition can take a person’s life in crazy directions!
