“Skylark” by Paula McLain is a haunting historical fiction novel that I highly recommend! The story is told in 2 timelines, both set in Paris, France. Timeline #1 takes place in the year 1664 while timeline #2 occurs in 1939. I don’t know which story I loved more, as they both had wonderful characters and were researched so well with interesting storylines. The connection between the two timelines lies in the hidden tunnels beneath Paris – the Catacombs – a path to freedom and escape from oppression.
In 1664, Alouette is the daughter of a Jewish dye maker. She is very talented in her own right, but because women are not allowed to shine, her discoveries are never hers to claim. When her father is imprisoned, Alouette finds herself in terrible danger as well. In 1939, Kristof is a medical student who becomes friends with the Jewish family who lives below his flat. When the family is taken away to a German camp, Kristof must decide whether to take action or to stay quiet. Both Alouette and Kristof end up on the side of resistance, helping others along the way. Their stories will stick with me.
“Skylark” has some slow-moving sections, especially at the beginning, but stick with it – the writing is beautiful and the characters are so memorable. The main characters are ordinary people who show a quiet strength that changes lives. The novel can be heartbreaking at times, but is also hopeful. So glad that I read this terrific story! (“Skylark” is also a Good Morning America Book Club Pick.)
