The Other People

Book cover of The Other People by C.B. Everett.

“The Other People” by C.B. Everett is a version of Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” novel, but with more of a horror/mystery slant. I was really intrigued by the dark humor throughout the book – and the ending twist was brilliant! (Readers who love ‘cozy’ mysteries will want to steer clear of this book though – it is pretty graphic in describing several brutal murders.)

Ten strangers find themselves in an old gothic house with no memory of how they arrived. They are told that in order to escape, they must save a missing woman within the next 12 hours. But the creepy house will not let anyone out and there is a killer picking off guests, one by one. The murders are rather gruesome and a dark theme runs throughout the novel. There is also a Beast who speaks to the reader in some of the chapters – this Beast is very clever and sarcastic and poses many questions. Who will be next to die? Will anyone be able to save the missing woman? And who exactly is the ‘Beast in the Basement’????

I was totally surprised by the twist at the end of “The Other People.” This book will appeal to readers who like horror mystery/thrillers, unreliable narrators and lots of points-of-view. My favorite chapters were the ones where the Beast spoke – although they didn’t help me foresee the surprise ending!!!
