“Broken Country” by Clare Leslie Hall is a Reece’s Book Club Pick that is full of love, loss, passion, sadness, anger and forgiveness. The novel is set in a small English village in the 1960’s. I really cared about the characters and the story kept me wanting to spend the entire afternoon reading more!
“Broken Country” follows Beth and the loves of her life – her first love, Gabriel; her husband, Frank; and her son, Bobby. Other key characters are Beth’s brother-in-law, Jimmy and his girlfriend, Nina. This novel needs to be experienced as it is read, so I won’t give many details. There is a mystery that is foreshadowed throughout the book, but not totally revealed until the end. (I suspected one part of the mystery, but was completely surprised by the other!)
This novel has chapters that occur in the present, the past and the far past. Hall’s beautiful writing lets the story come together slowly, and the mystery is revealed chapter by chapter. I absolutely loved “Broken Country!” Check it out if you enjoy character driven novels with situations that require hard choices for believable flawed characters.
