Pony Confidential

Book cover of "Pony Confidential" by Christina Lynch

“Pony Confidential” by Christina Lynch is a unique murder mystery novel – its chapters are narrated by Penny, the accused killer, and by a pony (named Pony). The result is a book full of humor, interesting perspectives and of course, the mystery of the murder.

Penny Marcus had a pony as a young girl – and she loved that pony dearly. He made her feel whole and understood. But everything changed for 12 year old Penny when a man was killed and Penny’s family moved across the country, selling Pony. Fast forward 20 years and Penny is now a third grade teacher and a mother. Shockingly, she is arrested and jailed for the murder that happened when she was a child. Penny is stuck in a jail cell, with only an overworked public defender/intern to help her. Unknown to Penny, Pony is trying his best to find her and his adventures take him cross-country with many adventures along the way. Pony senses that Penny is in trouble. Will Penny be convicted of murder? Will anyone else step up to help Penny? Will Pony be able to find and rescue Penny?

I really enjoyed this quirky cozy murder mystery! Pony was a delightful character – grumpy, sarcastic, and not particularly fond of humans. He and Penny are both in situations out of their control. The animals’ conversations are full of wit and social commentary. Yes, the Pony talks and so do the other animals . . . most humans have just forgotten how to hear them. If you love a novel with some magical realism, lots of animals and a good murder mystery, check out “Pony Confidential.”
