The Nature of Disappearing

“The Nature of Disappearing” by Kimi Cunningham Grant is a dual timeline mystery set in the Idaho wilderness. It is a slow burner with well-written characters and is less than 300 pages long.

Emlyn is a 28-year-old nature guide who has had a traumatic experience in her past. (The truth of that experience is revealed slowly as the novel progresses.) Tyler, a past boyfriend and Janessa, a past best-friend have been out of Emlyn’s life for quite a while. But when Tyler shows up at Emlyn’s door and asks her to please help him find Janessa because she is missing . . . Emlyn can’t refuse. The rest of the plot is best enjoyed without any clues! Where is Janessa? Why did Tyler leave Emlyn? Why did Emlyn and Janessa end their friendship? What dangers await Tyler and Emlyn in the wilderness?

There are wonderful descriptions of the Idaho outdoors in this beautiful novel. If you love slowly unfolding plots with a good mystery included, this novel fits the bill. I really kept reading chapter after chapter late into the night to find out what was going to happen to Emlyn and Janessa!

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’ staff will be at the Watseka Public Library on Monday, September 14, 2026, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, to help reunite citizens with missing money property through the I-Cash program.
In Illinois, the state treasurer is tasked with safeguarding missing money, such as unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts and unused rebate cards. Illinois holds more than $5 billion in unclaimed property. The state treasurer is legally required to return the property to the rightful owners no matter how long it takes. Individuals can search the state treasurer’s database for their name or the name of their business or non-profit at www.illinoistreasurer.gov/icash.
