If you haven’t read an Emily Henry novel yet, you need to check one out! Her most recent contemporary romance, “Funny Story” is light, funny (of course) and a fast read. I’ve been reading lots of mysteries and this rom-com was a wonderful change of pace.
Daphne is a children’s librarian in upper Michigan who has just been dumped by her fiancé. Miles is a bartender in the area who has just been dumped by his fiancé. And to raise the drama . . . those fiancés are now engaged. Miles and Daphne are thrown together out of necessity but end up becoming friends. Their characters share great banter and chemistry. Both Daphne and Miles have been damaged by their pasts, but are really likable despite their flaws. The side characters add to the story as well – Ashleigh is a fellow librarian, divorced with a son; Julia is Miles’s younger sister. Petra and Peter, the ex-fiancés/newly engaged couple, add some humor and depth as well.
I didn’t expect “Funny Story” to have much substance, but I was pleasantly surprised. This novel had me laughing out loud in several places and there was depth to the characters and the plot. “Funny Story” has been on the N.Y. Times Bestseller List for 13 weeks so far. If you’re looking for a sweet story (with some heat), a beach read or a ‘feel-good’ story – try “Funny Story!” (Reviewers say the audiobook is also wonderful!)
