“The Night Hunter” is a debut novel by Natalie Moss and is set on a South African game preserve. (An interesting note – Natalie Moss has actually gone on safaris herself since she was 3 years old.) This book is a thriller/mystery and does have multiple violent deaths – both human and animal, in case those events are not your cup of tea. Predators abound in this story!
Danielle and Grace are daughters of a renowned South African conservationist. Their mother ran a foundation that tried to protect the bush animals from tourists/poachers and other dangers. The sisters reunite in South Africa after their mom’s death and bring along some friends for a short safari trip. Almost immediately the trip turns chaotic. There is a murder and there are predators all around – both animal and human. Who is following the group and why are they after them? Will they be able to escape the reserve?? What secrets was their mother keeping???
This novel started out a bit slow for me, but picked up as the safari actually began. I loved the descriptions of South African scenery and of the animals and their behaviors!! I wasn’t as connected to the characters – they weren’t unlikeable, but they didn’t touch my heart or have me cheering for them. Even so, I did enjoy this book and especially its setting. It reminded me a bit of “The Lioness” by Chris Bohjalian.
