The Anniversary

I was in the mood for a mystery/thriller and “The Anniversary” by Alex Finlay did not disappoint! The structure of this novel is unique – the story covers one day, May 1st, in ten consecutive years as the May Day Killer strikes every year on that date in rural Nebraska. Some women have been found murdered, others are still missing and a few have survived, but with long-lasting emotional scars. This thriller kept my interest throughout.

Jules Delaney and Quinn Riley meet in high school and seem to relate to each other well, but May 1st is a pivotal day for both of them, and its effects keep them apart. Jules is attacked but doesn’t share her trauma with anyone. Quinn ends up in juvie and then joins the Army, resulting in even more trauma for him. The chapters alternate between Jules and Quinn’s point of view as they both search for the May Day Killer.

I really liked the characters of Jules and Quinn – their quest for the serial killer kept me turning pages. I felt for them and their families as the years stretched on with no luck in finding the killer. There were quite a few twists and turns and I suspected several different men before the final pages revealed the true killer. If you love mysteries/thrillers, be sure to check this novel out!
