The Insomniacs

Book cover of "The Insomniacs" by Allison Winn Scotch.

“The Insomniacs” by Allison Winn Scotch is a good drama/mystery novel with characters that kept my interest. The book starts a bit slowly as each short chapter is narrated by a different person, but by chapter 7 or 8, I just wanted to keep reading to see what happened.

Sybil (a type-A empty nester), Zeke (a baseball player) and Julian (a retiree) all have trouble sleeping. They connect in a late-night online chat room and after some conversations, decide to meet in person. The three gather at a diner, where they add Betty (a late-shift waitress) to their little group. The four insomniacs begin building relationships when suddenly, one of their group dies and another goes missing. Secrets are uncovered and the remaining friends decide to investigate the disappearance.

“The Insomniacs” was an enjoyable read – I would call it a cozy mystery. The characters are relatable and I cared about their feelings and safety. The insomnia aspect didn’t seem that important, other than it was a convenient way for the characters to meet. There are a few twists and a bit of romance is also thrown into the mix. This book is worth a look!
