It was so interesting to read “Cleopatra” by Saara El-Arifi. This historical fiction novel follows Cleopatra’s life from the age of eighteen, through her death. I loved the author’s beginning line: “You know my name, but you do not know me.” I was hooked from that point on! Cleopatra is the narrator of this story and often speaks to the reader with little asides that show her intelligence and personality. An author’s note is at the beginning of the novel that was very helpful in understanding history’s perception of Cleopatra.
Cleopatra was a multi-layered woman – pharaoh/ruler, goddess (according to Egyptian beliefs), mother and lover – and this story shows her talents and her flaws. The novel is well researched and definitely depicts Cleopatra as a very intelligent woman who loved Egypt and its citizens as well as her family. Be prepared for brutality (as the time period is B.C.) and rulers usually held onto their power through decisive actions. There are 3 sections to the book – ‘The Witch,’ ‘The Whore’ and ‘The Villain.’
I keep thinking about “Cleopatra” after several days of finishing this beautiful novel. If you are interested at all in this ancient queen or in ancient Egypt and Rome, please check this book out!
