James Patterson and Imogen Edwards-Jones have labeled “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe” as a True Crime Thriller. It is an easy read with very short chapters and gives an interesting look into the life of famous actress, Marilyn Monroe. However, the book is not a ‘thriller.’ It really looks at Marilyn’s entire life, especially her time in Hollywood. I would label this novel as more of a biography. The novel has been researched, and contains many facts about Marilyn Monroe’s life, but it is still categorized as fiction.
Norma Jeane Mortenson, a.k.a. Marilyn Monroe, spent much of her childhood seeking love and stability as she moved from foster home to foster home. That insecurity was always present in her life, both in her relationships and her career. Hollywood was not kind to women in Marilyn’s time and the novel details the demands of the studios and the efforts that Marilyn took to assert her control over her career. The marriages of Marilyn Monroe are also a major topic in this novel.
I enjoyed reading “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe.” It was sad to read about her extensive addiction to different drugs and her desperate search for love. The book offers some insight into her last few days but leaves the decision of whether her death was suicide or murder up to the reader. I will admit that once I finished the story, I spent a good amount of time googling pictures of Marilyn that were described throughout the book.
