Archer Sullivan introduces a great main character in her new novel, “The Witch’s Orchard.” Annie Gore is a private investigator who grew up with a difficult home life in the hills of Appalachia, joined the military and became a special investigator with the Air Force. I hope this novel is the first of many in a series, because I really enjoyed the read!
Annie is hired to investigate the disappearance of 3 little girls in a ten-year-old cold case in the Appalachian mountains. The young girls were taken in broad daylight and an applehead doll was left in each child’s place. The hills of North Carolina are familiar to Annie, and she needs the money, so she accepts the case. The people in this mountain town don’t open up easily to Annie’s questions, but she persists. She discovers secrets, eerie mountain folklore and dangerous situations as she searches for the truth. The sheriff’s deputy, A.J. becomes a friend (and more) as they work together to find out what happened to the girls.
I really got caught up in this wonderful mystery debut! Annie is an appealing, interesting character and I liked her immediately. I can’t wait to read the next novel in this series! If you like mysteries with a bit of creepiness, due to the setting and the folklore, make sure to pick this book up!
