Sophie Kinsella is most famous for her “Shopaholic” book series, but her new novella, “What Does It Feel Like?” is deserving of all of the accolades it is getting from fans and critics. This is a fictionalized autobiography of Sophie’s diagnosis of a brain tumor and her subsequent surgery, treatment and determination to ‘just keep going.’
I wasn’t sure if I would like reading this novel, because of the difficult subject matter, but I am SO GLAD I opened it up. “What Does It Feel Like?” is funny, heartbreaking, full of love and warmth, and it is so uplifting. The main character, Eve, is a writer whose life is upended when doctors discover a probable cancerous tumor in her brain. The novella details the struggles that Eve experiences as she recovers after surgery. Her husband is such a shining light and shows so much love helping Eve cope with her short-term memory loss. I especially loved the humor that comes through, even during difficult times in the story.
Please read “What Does It Feel Like?”!!! It is so worth the short amount of time that it took me to finish. The book is only a little over 100 pages – but WOW what honesty and emotions come through in those pages!! I will probably read this one again – it is SO good!
