Mystery/Thriller lovers should check out “Like Mother, Like Daughter” by Kimberly McCreight. This novel didn’t ‘wow’ me right away, but by the time I was halfway through the book, I couldn’t put it down! There is a complicated mother-daughter relationship at the heart of this story – and it was very well written. The insights into mom and daughter were what really drove the plot of this novel for me.
Cleo is a college student who has been at odds with her mother, Katrina. Cleo’s feelings take a sudden turn when she arrives at home for dinner with her mom and finds signs of a struggle and Katrina is missing. Both Cleo and Katrina have secrets and they reveal them as the book goes on, as chapters are told in alternating views. Is Katrina still alive? If yes . . . then who abducted her? Is her husband, Aiden involved in her disappearance? Is this a work-related problem from Katrina’s law firm? Is this revenge from Cleo’s ex-boyfriend? Or does this situation go back to Katrina’s troubled youth?
I loved the twists and turns in “Like Mother, Like Daughter.” Give this novel a chance as it begins a little slowly, and picks up steam about halfway through. I give this book high marks for the mother-daughter angle and above average marks for the mystery!
