If you’ve been looking for an interesting non-fiction book to read, Killing the Legends: The Lethal Danger of Celebrity by Bill O’Reilly & Martin Dugard might appeal to many readers. The book is researched well, just as the other 11 books in this series, and focuses on the fame of Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Muhammed Ali.
The novel details how the intense celebrity lifestyle affected each of these charismatic men and also how it led to each one’s downfall. All three trusted someone else with their finances and with their careers – which did not turn out well, when those in charge looked after themselves instead. All three stars had ‘hanger-oners’ surrounding them and all of them had addictions, whether it was the need for attention, trying to stay young or drugs. The novel is really interesting and I learned new details about all three celebrities.
I have read 3 of the “Killing” books in O’Reilly’s series so far, and really liked all of them. Killing the Legends is probably my favorite. The novels don’t judge Elivis, Lennon or Ali – but present the facts surrounding the time period in their life. It is sad that these extremely talented personalities were often isolated from friendships with others and were taken advantage of by managers or agents. I think my “To Do List” needs to include reading more of the books in this series!
