Not Quite Dead Yet

“Not Quite Dead Yet” by Holly Jackson is a terrific thriller and a Good Morning America Pick. I read it in two short afternoons. At first, I wasn’t really drawn in by the main characters, but by a third of the way into the novel – I didn’t want to put it down!! If you love murder mysteries with an edginess to them, this book is for you! (FYI – there is a bit of ‘language’ throughout.)

Jet Mason is 27 years old, a law school graduate, but has no real direction in life. She has returned to her hometown in Vermont and attends the annual Halloween festival. Jet is brutally attacked when she gets home from the festival, but survives. Unfortunately, the doctor tells her that within a week, she will die from a ruptured aneurysm. Jet decides that she will put that week to good use and will solve her ‘murder’ in that time. Her childhood friend, Billy Finney, joins Jet in her race to find out who attacked her. In that week, they discover family members and friends are hiding secrets and telling lies. More crimes are committed and Jet’s life is threatened again. Can you guess who the attacker is before Jet and Billy finish their investigation?

“Not Quite Dead Yet” is a fairly fast paced thriller with a heart-wrenching ending. I absolutely loved the character of Billy Finney. Jet Mason was difficult to like at first, but she really grew on me as I read the novel. I thought Jet’s letter-writing was one of the best parts of the book. The last third of the novel is SO good that it is almost impossible to put it down . . . lots of twists and turns!
