“The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks” by Shauna Robinson is a delightful contemporary fiction novel that will especially appeal to book lovers. It is cute, funny, has a little romance and a touch of ‘bawdy’ humor. (And it is the book chosen for Darcy’s Ladies Night Out Book Club this September 16 at 5 p.m.)
Maggie Banks is a college graduate who has taken job after job, and just never found anything that satisfied her. She currently lives with her parents – until her college roommate calls with an offer to run a bookshop for a few months. Maggie accepts the offer and moves to the town of Bell River, even though she hasn’t read a book since college. She finds that the bookshop only sells “old” classics and that there are multiple rules to the job. The supporting characters are interesting . . . Ralph – head of the Bell Society and controller of the town; Malcolm – Ralph’s assistant; Rochelle – Co-Owner of the bookstore; Vernon – curmudgeon who lives above the bookstore; and more. Maggie begins putting her touch on the town from her very first day and the changes are major. How will Maggie save the bookstore and the town from the restrictive rules of the Bell Society? And will Maggie find a job that feels like it is right for her?
