“The Ghostwriter” by Julie Clark is a psychological thriller with a large dose of family drama. It kept my interest from beginning to end. I loved the way the answers to the murder mystery unfolded bit by bit. I also loved trying to decide whether characters were telling the truth or a lie as the story advanced.
In June, 1975, Vincent Taylor’s teenage sister and brother were brutally murdered in their own home. 50 years later, their murderer has never been found, although many people suspect Vincent of the crime. Vincent has gone on to become a famous author of horror novels, but leads a very reclusive life. Olivia Dumont has been a successful ghostwriter, but has been blacklisted and is desperately in need of work. When Vincent Taylor requests that she ghostwrite his final novel, she reluctantly agrees . . . her reluctance is because she is Taylor’s only daughter and has spent her entire life trying to distance herself from that dark history. When Olivia arrives at her childhood home, she discovers that her father’s memory is fading and she isn’t sure whether he is telling her the truth about the past. She begins to uncover bits and pieces of the puzzle as she also tries to mend the relationship with her father.
“The Ghostwriter” is a suspenseful, multi-layered novel that I really enjoyed. The characters are well-developed and I loved the glimpses into life in the 1970’s – they were spot on! This will probably be a top mystery book this year!
