The Ending Writes Itself

“The Ending Writes Itself” is an ‘Agatha Christie like’ mystery written by the author duo of V.E. Schwab and Cat Clarke – pen name: Evelyn Clarke. There are many insights/comments on the book publishing industry throughout the novel, so book lovers will enjoy the romance, horror, sci-fi, YA, and mystery writers and their characterizations. The plot is a slow building thriller with a fast-paced ending and a few twists.

A group of want-to-be-famous authors are invited to legendary author, Arthur Fletch’s private Scottish island. Upon arrival, they are told by Fletch’s editor and agent that Mr. Fletch is dead and has left his last manuscript unfinished. The authors have been invited to compete for a million dollar prize and a publishing deal for the best written ending to the manuscript. There is a 72 hour limit, however . . . Who will write the best ending? And who will survive the 72 hours?

“The Ending Writes Itself” is a fun read, even if the plot didn’t seem like anything really new. The emphasis on the writers and their craft was a different slant that I enjoyed. And I didn’t suspect the last twist at the ending! This novel might not be a book of the year, but it was a good read.
