I have never read a Sally Hepworth novel that I didn’t like . . . And I’m SO happy to say that I LOVED “Mad Mabel” and could not put it down! This novel is a contemporary mystery with many twists and turns but it also tugged at my emotions in so many ways . . . I laughed, got teary eyed and got angry at the heartbreaking events that occurred in the story. The novel isn’t like Hepworth’s usual thrillers, but the characters and their friendship (or lack of friendship) take the lead – along with the questions about past events.
Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick is an 81 year old lady who has lived on Kenny Lane for sixty years. She is crabby, witty, blunt, sarcastic and lonely. When Elsie’s next door neighbor dies, people discover that Elsie used to be known as ‘Mad Mabel’ and she was accused of murder during her childhood. Is the reputation correct? Has ‘Mad Mabel’ returned? Or is Elsie being misjudged? The novel is full of wonderful characters. I especially enjoyed Persephone – a persistent, curious, lovely 7-year old neighbor; and Daphne – Elsie’s closest friend since childhood.
“Mad Mabel” could be one of my favorite books of the year! It is multi-layered and told in both ‘past’ and ‘present’ excerpts. Be prepared for Elsie’s rude mouth as she doesn’t care if society thinks she is polite. Check this novel out when you are able!!!
